1What Society Rides Is — and Is Not

Society Rides is a community notice board for ride sharing within residential housing societies. It allows residents of the same society to post, find and arrange shared rides among themselves.

Society Rides is not a taxi aggregator, a transport service, a cab hailing platform, or a commercial vehicle operator. We do not employ drivers, despatch vehicles, set mandatory fares, or enter into any contract of carriage with any user. No ride arranged through this platform constitutes a commercial transport service.

Every ride posted on Society Rides is a voluntary private arrangement between residents of the same housing society. Society Rides is the platform on which that arrangement is noticed and communicated. It is not a party to the arrangement itself.

For the avoidance of doubt: Society Rides does not hold any taxi aggregator licence, contract carriage permit, or transportation network company authorisation, nor is it required to do so, as it does not operate, despatch or profit from any vehicle or journey. Any characterisation of Society Rides as a commercial transport operator is factually and legally incorrect.

2Who May Use the App

You may use Society Rides if you meet all of the following conditions:

Users under 18 may not register independently. A parent or guardian who is a registered member of their society may arrange rides on behalf of a minor and accompany them. The registered adult member bears full responsibility for the minor's participation.

One person may hold only one account. Creating multiple accounts is a breach of these Terms and will result in termination of all associated accounts.

3Accounts and Registration

You create your account using your name, mobile number, and email address. No SMS-based OTP verification is used. By registering, you confirm that the information you provide is accurate and truthful.

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password. You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account. Notify us immediately at legal@societyrides.com if you suspect unauthorised use of your account.

Society Rides uses Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) for all in-app notifications. Your account can be used across multiple Android devices using the same credentials.

By registering, you confirm that you have read and agree to both these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy.

4Founders: Appointment, Duties and Removal

4.1 The Founder Role

A Founder is the first verified resident to register a housing society on Society Rides. Upon approval, the Founder receives Gold tier membership, 200 karma points, permanent Founder recognition in their society's gallery, and a set of single-use invite codes to seed initial membership.

The Founder role is a position of community trust. It is not an employment, agency, franchise or any commercial relationship with Society Rides.

4.2 Co-Founders

Additional residents of the same society may be appointed as Co-Founders, either by the original Founder or by Society Rides administration. Co-Founders receive the same recognition and rights as the original Founder. A society may have multiple Founders. The ability to appoint Co-Founders through the app will be made available in a future update; in the interim, Co-Founder appointments may be requested by writing to legal@societyrides.com.

4.3 Founder Performance and Removal

A Founder who does not actively seed their society may be removed from the Founder role by Society Rides. The following shall constitute grounds for review:

Before removal, Society Rides will make reasonable effort to contact the Founder and provide an opportunity to respond. Removal from the Founder role does not affect karma points or tier status accumulated by the individual as a regular member.

Society Rides reserves the right to appoint a new Founder or Co-Founder for any society in which the founding Founder has been removed or is inactive.

4.4 Invite Codes

Invite codes are single-use and society-specific. Each code may be used by exactly one person. Codes are personal — Founders are expected to distribute them directly to known residents. Mass posting of codes in public forums, social media, or unrelated groups is a misuse of the system and may result in code cancellation and Founder review.

5Document Uploads and Verification

Certain users are required to upload documents as part of registration or the Founder application process. These documents include identity proof, address proof, driving licences, vehicle photographs, and society photographs.

Society Rides does not independently verify the authenticity, validity, or accuracy of any document uploaded by any user. Documents are held on record and reviewed visually at the administrative level for obvious irregularities. Society Rides makes no representation that any uploaded document is genuine, current, or belongs to the person who uploaded it.

By uploading any document, you warrant that:

Uploading a false, forged, expired or fraudulent document is a serious breach of these Terms and will result in immediate account termination. Society Rides reserves the right to report such matters to appropriate authorities.

Driving licences uploaded by users who register as drivers are held for record purposes. Society Rides does not verify whether a licence is valid, current, endorsed for the vehicle category being used, or belongs to the registrant. Riders are advised to satisfy themselves of a driver's credentials before boarding any vehicle.

6Ride Conduct — Rules for Drivers and Riders

All users of Society Rides agree to abide by the following conduct standards. These apply from the moment a ride is posted or requested until the ride is completed and reviewed.

For Drivers

Arrive on time and at the agreed point. If you cannot make a ride, cancel with as much notice as possible. Repeated unexplained no-shows are a breach of these Terms.
Drive safely and lawfully. You are responsible for your vehicle and for the safety of all occupants. Traffic laws apply regardless of any arrangement made through this platform.
Honour your stated preferences. If you posted a ride for women only, or Gold tier only, do not deviate from your own settings without updating the app.
🚫
Do not demand payment beyond the declared contribution. The maximum permissible contribution is ₹3 per km per passenger for Indian rides, up to the equivalent in other countries as displayed in the app. Demanding more is a breach of these Terms.
🚫
Do not share a rider's personal information obtained through the platform with any third party, for any purpose.
🚫
Do not harass, intimidate, or discriminate against any rider on the basis of gender, religion, caste, community, or any other characteristic.

For Riders

Be at the assembly point on time. A driver waiting more than a reasonable time (suggested: 5 minutes) is entitled to proceed without you. Repeated late arrivals will affect your karma score and ride acceptance.
Cancel promptly if your plans change. Last-minute cancellations without reason cause real inconvenience. The karma and review system reflects this.
Pay any agreed contribution promptly and without dispute. If a driver has marked a contribution as expected, it is your obligation to pay it as agreed.
🚫
Do not share a driver's or co-rider's personal information obtained through the platform with any third party.
🚫
Do not use the platform to solicit rides for commercial purposes, to organise group transport for events unrelated to your own genuine commute, or for any purpose other than personal ride sharing.

For All Users

🚫
Do not use the platform to harass, threaten, defame or intimidate any other user — whether through ride comments, reviews, or any other feature.
🚫
Do not leave false reviews. Reviews must reflect your genuine experience of the ride. Manipulating the karma or review system is a serious breach of these Terms.
🚫
Do not misuse the SOS feature. Triggering a false emergency alert is a breach of these Terms and may constitute an offence under applicable law.

7No-Shows, Disputes and Enforcement

7.1 No-Shows

A driver who fails to appear for a confirmed ride without cancellation, or a rider who is not at the assembly point within a reasonable time, is considered a no-show. No-shows are recorded in the system and affect karma scores and ratings. Repeated no-shows may result in suspension of the ability to post or request rides.

7.2 Disputes Between Users

Society Rides is a community platform. Disputes between drivers and riders are, in the first instance, a matter between those individuals as neighbours and community members. Society Rides does not arbitrate disputes regarding payment, route, timing, or conduct between users.

Where a complaint is raised with Society Rides — by writing to legal@societyrides.com — we will review it and may take action under Section 13 if a clear breach of these Terms is established. We make no commitment to investigate or resolve every complaint, and our ability to act is limited by available bandwidth, evidence, and the community nature of the platform.

7.3 Platform Rights

Society Rides reserves the right to:

As the platform matures, a society-level moderation panel will be made available to approved society administrators, enabling community-led enforcement. Until that feature is released, enforcement remains at the discretion of Society Rides administration.

8Payments and Fuel Contributions

Society Rides does not process or intermediate any payments. All fuel contributions are agreed between driver and rider directly and settled between them privately. Society Rides is not a party to any payment transaction.

Fuel contributions are capped at ₹3 per kilometre per passenger for rides in India, with a suggested minimum of ₹50. Equivalent limits apply in other countries as displayed within the app for the relevant country.

These limits exist to ensure that ride sharing remains clearly within the domain of community goodwill and cost recovery, and does not constitute commercial transport. Demanding contributions above these limits is a breach of these Terms.

Fuel contributions are set by the driver for the full journey. Where a rider joins only part of a route, the stated contribution amount applies regardless of the distance travelled by that rider. Ride seekers are advised to consider the stated contribution before requesting a seat. Or seek a shorter rides that fulfils their need.

8.1 Disrupted or Incomplete Rides

Where a ride cannot be completed due to vehicle breakdown, medical emergency, road closure, force majeure, or circumstances beyond either party's control, fuel contributions are a matter of goodwill between the driver and rider. Society Rides recommends that no contribution be expected where the ride did not commence, and that any contribution for a partially completed ride be agreed proportionately and in a spirit of neighbourly consideration. Society Rides does not arbitrate payment disputes arising from incomplete rides.

Society Rides does not currently require any in-app payment method. If in-app payment features are introduced in future, separate terms and notices will apply and users will be notified in advance.

9Subscription

Society Rides is currently free to use. By registering, you acknowledge that after an initial free period of six months from the date of your registration, a subscription fee of ₹50 per month (or the currency equivalent for your country as displayed in the app) may apply for continued use of the platform.

If and when a subscription is introduced, you will be notified with reasonable advance notice — not less than 30 days — through the app and by email. You will have the opportunity to discontinue use before any charge is applied. Society Rides will not charge any subscription without prior explicit notice.

Your subscription, if activated, is tied to your user account and phone number — not to any specific device or housing society. If you move to a different society, your subscription status and accumulated karma carry with you.

10The SOS Emergency Feature

The SOS feature is provided as a best-effort community safety tool. When triggered, it records audio, captures GPS coordinates, and sends emergency notifications to selected members of your housing society who have the app installed and active.

Society Rides makes no guarantee of response, response time, or outcome in connection with the SOS feature. Notified responders are community volunteers and are under no obligation to respond. The SOS feature is not a substitute for contacting emergency services. In any life-threatening emergency, call 112 (India) or your local emergency number first.

Audio recorded during an SOS event is stored securely and is accessible only to Society Rides super administration. It is not accessible to society admins, SOS responders, or any other user. Audio recordings may be released to law enforcement agencies upon lawful request. See our Privacy Policy for full details of SOS data handling.

Deliberately triggering a false SOS alarm is a serious breach of these Terms and may expose the user to legal consequences under applicable law.

11Insurance — Declaration Only

Drivers who register as drivers on Society Rides are asked to declare their vehicle insurance details, including policy expiry date and whether coverage is Third Party only or Comprehensive.

Society Rides does not verify any insurance declaration made by any driver. Insurance details are displayed to ride seekers as declared by the driver. Society Rides makes no representation that any stated insurance is valid, current, genuine, or that it covers passengers in a ride-sharing arrangement.

It is the sole responsibility of the rider to satisfy themselves of a driver's insurance coverage before boarding any vehicle. It is the sole responsibility of the driver to ensure that their vehicle is insured in a manner appropriate for carrying passengers, and to check with their insurer whether ride-sharing arrangements affect their policy terms.

Society Rides shall not be liable for any loss, injury, or damage arising from inadequate, false, lapsed, or non-existent insurance coverage declared by any driver.

12Limitation of Liability

Society Rides provides a community notice board platform. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law:

Nothing in these Terms excludes liability for fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, or any liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

13Suspension and Termination

You may delete your account at any time through the app's Profile settings. Your data handling upon deletion is described in our Privacy Policy.

Society Rides may suspend or terminate your account, with or without prior notice, if:

Where practicable and where the breach is not serious, we will attempt to provide warning before suspension. For serious breaches — including false document uploads, threats, harassment, or SOS misuse — suspension may be immediate and without warning.

A suspended user may write to legal@societyrides.com to request review of the suspension decision. We will consider such requests but are not obligated to reinstate any account.

14Changes to These Terms

Society Rides may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you through the app and by email with not less than 14 days' notice before the changes take effect.

If you continue to use Society Rides after updated Terms take effect, you are considered to have accepted the updated Terms. If you do not agree to updated Terms, you should discontinue use and delete your account before they take effect.

The current version of these Terms is always available at societyrides.com/terms.

15Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of India. Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms, or your use of Society Rides, shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the State of West Bengal, India.

Users located in other jurisdictions — including the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, or elsewhere — acknowledge that their use of the platform is governed by Indian law, without prejudice to any mandatory rights they may hold under the law of their own jurisdiction.
